Tunisia’s Resorts
Many visitors come primarily to enjoy the sunny palm fringed beaches and cool blue sea at Tunisia’s resorts. This country is blessed with some of the finest beaches in the world, offering the visitor the wonders of the natural environment along with with first class accommodation, dining and entertainment facilities.
Djerba (or Jerba)
Djerba is the largest island in the North African region, approximately 100 kilometers east of Gabes in the south east of Tunisia. It has a good range of hotels and other accommodation including the luxurious Radisson Blu Resort, plus the usual facilities you would find on the mainland. Houmt-Souk is the island’s capital, with a population of over 40,000 while Djerba as a whole has around 120,000 inhabitants. The island can be reached by ferries running between Ajim and the mainland, and also by domestic and international flights to Djerba’s airport.
Hammamet
Hammamet is located in Tunisia’s north east, approximately 60 kilometers south of the capital, Tunis. It is the country’s original resort and is sometimes referred to as Tunisia’s St Tropez. Excellent hotels including the splendid Hotel Le Royal Hammamet, plus restaurants, tennis and golf facilities, horse riding and if you grow tired sunning on the beach, Hammamet is renowned for water sports. The area is also famous for jasmine, which can be found in the many souvenirs around town. Hammamet is easily reached by motorway or by train.
Monastir
Monastir is approximately 160 kilometers south east of Tunis, was originally a fishing port and is now a popular resort with a wonderful mix of the old and the new. Hotels and resorts include the Vime Helya Beach Hotel & Spa, and modern amenities assure your comfort while the town offers hints of it’s history with features such as it’s walls dating back to the 8th century. Monastir can be reached by road and by rail (via Sousse), and also by it’s own international airport.
Nabuel
Nabeul is close to the resort of Hammamet, and is a popular coastal offering similar facilities to it’s larger neighbour. Formerly a Roman colony, it is today famous as Tunisia’s premier region for pottery and ceramic works. These can be found all around the town as well as at the Friday market. Nabeul is about an hour from Tunis by road.
Sousse
Sousse is around 140 kilometers from Tunis, and is another charming resort, known as “the pearl of the Sahel”. Although it is Tunisia’s third largest city, it is assuredly a most relaxing place to stay and you will not regret your visit. Apart from the beautiful beach-front area, there is plenty to see and do with historic buildings such as the 8th century fortress and a lighthouse that dates back to 859AD. Sousse can be reached by road and rail, and also via the airport at Monastir.
Tabarka
Tarbarka is located on Tunisia’s north coast close to the border with Algeria, about 170 kilometers from Tunis. A beautiful relaxed, coastal town with a rich history, Tabarka is known for it’s coral and for fishing, and the newly built Montazah-Tabarka resort has increased it’s share of visitors. There is plenty to do what with snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing and of course fishing, and there is even an 18 hole golf course. Tabarka can be reached by road or by flights to Tabarka International Airport.
