Tunis

Tunis: an overview
Tunis is Tunisia’s capital city with a population of over a million, with greater Tunis being home to almost four million people. Located on the Mediterranean coast, Tunis is a curious mixture of the old and the new, the traditional and the modern.

Hotels in Tunis
Hotels in Tunis range from the cheap, basic (and not always pleasant) to the luxurious, with a wide range of options in-between. Good value is to be found but it is wise whenever possible to compare your options as a higher price does not always mean a better room or service.

As a general rule, mid range hotels are probably the safest bet for getting the best value for your Dinar. If you are on a tight budget, cheaper options are available in the medina and around the centre of town.

Getting there and getting around
If you are flying in you will arrive at the Tunis Carthage Airport, which is almost ten kilometers from the centre of town. There are also international ferries from Italy and France which arrive and depart from a number of terminals, the busiest being La Goulette.

For getting around there is a light metro system that has four lines, the TGM suburban train system, a local bus network and of course plenty of taxis.

Things to see and do
If you are staying in Tunis you cannot miss the medina. The huge market is a pleasure to visit, with a vast of handicrafts and gifts. The individual handicrafts tend to be grouped together so you will find areas for pottery, ceramics, fabrics, gold and so on. Be prepared to bargain with the vendors.

Le Musée National du Bardo (or Bardo Museum is a former palace and houses a collection that documents Tunisia’s development from prehistoric times onward.

Zitouna Mosque is Tunisia’s largest mosque, and while non Muslims are welcomed to visit the courtyard, only Muslims are permitted to enter the actual mosque.

Also worth visiting are the Musée du Patrimoine Traditionnel (or Dar Ben Abdallah) and the French influenced Cathedral of St. Vincent de Paul.

With a little research, you should find the hotels in Tunis an enjoyable place to stay.
